See a Sample Chapter at InformIT

Sams has posted a sample chapter of openSUSE Linux Unleashed at the InformIT Network. It’s “Managing Users and Security in openSUSE Linux.” Have a look. Feel free to comment either here or on the site directly.

  1. Security? HA HA HA HA

I just ran tcpdump eth0 on my newly installed Suse 10.3 machine to find it’s talking to the whole internet, several suse sites, one google site, one auditmypc site, and yes, one US government site (which I decline to name) and other numbered-only sites.

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE? Isn’t the Firewall supposed to stop this unauthorized talking behind my back? My Suse 10.1 install is quiet as a church mouse, but 10.3 is busy reporting on itself to only God knows who? Several sites only had the IPV4 number, scary indeed!

Can some kind soul tell me what to do? Dump the Suse Firewall and put a real firewall in? I have to find all these programs that are talking to the outside world, and remove them from my machine, quite a daunting task, considering all the URLs that I logged during just a 20 minute dump.

Can someone please rewrite the firewall security Chapter 23 in the OpenSuse Linux unleashed Sams Book that I paid good money for, and explain how REAL security is established? There is NO security here that I can see, unless you beg to correct me?

Thanks for considering my request, as I have to secure this machine NOW. (and not get paid for it either)

  2. Randall,

Well, I’m not exactly sure what’s going on. Fundamentally there’s not a whole lot of difference in the SUSE firewall from 10.1 to 10.3. Although the GUI in YaST is different, I would first compare the settings from the 10.1 box. to the 10.3 box. Can you tell me if your current 10.3 settings are as I recommended, or just the defaults? I’ll assume your system is fully updated as well.

    Mike
