It’s BarCampMilwaukee Time Again September 23, 2007

It’s that time of year again. BarCampMilwaukee2 is just three weeks away! This is a weekend “un-conference” going nonstop from 10 AM Saturday, October 13 through 4 PM Sunday, October 14 at the Schlitz Park Center, 1555 Rivercenter Dr. in downtown Milwaukee (map).

So what is this thing? It is a gathering of people passionate about technology, creativity, communication…well, it’s open to just about anyone passionate about anything. BarCamp is the place to share your passions with others of like mind. Everyone is asked to participate at some level. Ideally, you can lead a session; but if you’re not into that, you can participate at any level you want.

Some of you may recall my posts from last year’s BarCampMilwaukee, these may give you a better sense of what goes on.

The Saturday Sessions

The Sunday Sessions

The Mini-Mashup (overnight Saturday)

You can see what kinds of things people are planning for this year’s event on the Sessions page. I will probably deliver a new version of the History of Desktop Linux this year, with an emphasis on what’s up for the future.

So what does it cost to attend this event with all these fascinating people? The Registration fee is: $0.00. Right, no charge. PLUS, if you register right now–well, by Wednesday, September 26, you will get a truly cool t-shirt that fits you (we’re going to order some extras, but you’re only guaranteed a shirt with early registration).

If you have any time at all on this weekend, you really ought to come. You’re not required to stay all night (though you’ll miss the Drupal-thon if you don’t), or for more than an hour if you don’t want to. There is food (yep, that’s free too) at the standard intervals, caffeinated beverages, and whatever else people bring to the event.

I am thrilled to bits that my employer, Compuware, decided to sponsor BarCampMilwaukee2. And there will be a batch of books from my publisher as well. If our luck holds, I may even have a few copies of openSUSE Linux Unleashed on hand.

This is where you Get Started. I look forward to seeing all my readers here.

Well, it’s been not quite 15 years after I got my first email address, and perhaps a dozen years since I started writing about the Internet. Yup, I’m an old fart. But I still do new things, even if they’re really old. About an hour ago, I registered my first domain name. In the not-too-distant future, you will be able to find my little corner of the Web at www.michaelmccallister.com.

The site isn’t entirely planned out yet, but I expect to have material related to my books and articles (of course), openSUSE Linux more generally, and still more “working, writing, and open source” stuff. I’m hoping to use Drupal as the backdrop, and see what sorts of things can be done with it. I’ll write the site with Quanta Plus, and you can be sure it will be standards-compliant. It will not be graphics-heavy; I’m not a “designer,” I do content. The construction of the site will undoubtedly be a major topic around here for awhile.

What prompted this sudden commitment? My friends at Web414, specifically John December, are creating a business card for the organization. The design has the  club logo on the front, and a list of URLs that our members have designed. At last night’s meeting, John went around the room asking people if they wanted to participate. He got around to me, and I mumbled lamely that I didn’t have a URL of my own. I’ve been planning a personal site for years, but sometimes you just need something to push you over the edge. This was it! So now all those plans can start to bear fruit. Making this announcement further pushes that plan towards reality. So please get on my case if you don’t see anything at www.michaelmccallister.com after a reasonable interval. Minimum goal is to have something semi-worthwhile up in time for BarCampMilwaukee2, coming October 13-14.
More about that later.
